My parents divorced when I was five years old. My little sister whom was about two years younger than me, was not aware of the consequences of our parents divorce. In reality, I too was ignorant in the facts of divorce.
Every summer, my little sister and I would visit with our father for six weeks. My father would rent an RV for our adventure to the Carolina's.
My dad always did his best to show his love for us. My dad's new wife(my stepmother) also did her best to show her love for us. No matter how much fun I had traveling with my father and family, there was always something missing. A vacancy in the family vacation.
I can tell you for sure that my faith is a lot like that vacancy I could detect in those family vacations.
Did my step mom show me love because she loved me? Or was it because she loved my father?
Does Jesus really love me? Or does Jesus love me because of his love of the Father?
I could say I love Jesus and his father whom we all know to be God. But I have to stop and ask myself, "Do I love God or do I love myself?"
The problem I face everyday is rooted in vanity. My vanity creates a vacancy in my heart. Is love unconditional? Am I confusing love with fear?
Is my fear of death cloaked in a facade of love for God?
I do not know how to answer these questions, but I fear I am doomed to an eternity of vacancy.
I do know what I have been told. That if I accept Christ as the son of God who gave his life to save my soul, I will have everlasting life in Heaven.
My step mom accepted me as the son of my father. I can say to this day, she was always there for me. Even when I did not think I needed her. That may have been enough for me, but was it enough for her? I hope it was, as she deserved just as much fulfillment of the relationship, as me.
This is for the mother that was married to my father.
