There is something about the innate fight within us that we hold onto, many times way too long, something or someone. Surrender is the operative word here. Surrender is not easy. Sometimes even after we surrender, our memories of what once was often keep us locked into the pre-surrender condition.
Soldiers surrender when it the only way to end a battle. It is admitting defeat, letting go and giving up the fight. It is humiliating and crushes the spirit and pierces the soul.
The phrase in Alcoholics Anonymous "Let go and let God" is a good tool to keep our minds focused on who really is in control and in charge of our lives.
Surrender is giving away and it does not always have to be a bad thing but a mutual thing. I surrender a dollar to purchase a coke. The expectation is I surrender a dollar and the clerk surrenders a coke to me. It is a win-win surrender.
So where am I on my surrender all to God journey?
Today is Mother's Day and I am sad because I miss my mother who is with Jesus. I am also sad because I have no children and I am not a mother.
Surrender is a conscious choice, despite whether we really want to or not. Today I choose to surrender my sadness to God. I believe He can take a negative emotion like sorrow and turn it into something good. Isn't that what he tells us in Romans 8:28? It is Gods' way to "make lemonade out of lemons". I surrender my sadness to God who can always make my life better and fix things His way, not necessarily my way. Surrender to God - it isn't always easy. My mind and will are constantly in conflict for me to have things my way.
This morning I look outside, and even though the sky is cloudy, there are two inches of new wet, spring snow that fell overnight. It brightens my day. God is covering my Mother's Day sadness with a blanket of millions of snowflakes love. I surrender my sadness to Him and He gives me snow.
I fill my lungs with the free air He has given me and exhale. Freedom ...rest ...- I can finally breathe and know it is going to be okay. I have surrendered.
The sun peaks through the clouds after five days of pouring down rain as liquid snow. I am humbled by His bright shining glory.
I surrender everything to God and I give Him control of my life.
I will try not to take it back even if I have to perform the act of surrender every day.

I loved the image of the snow.
