The surrender of ones life to Jesus is mandatory. Many believers just don’t seem to get this part of salvation. Paul, the Apostle makes this clear in Romans 6. When we accept Christ as our Savior we are also placing ourselves under His Lordship. So, does this mean if we don’t surrender totally (as Lord) we aren’t saved? No! You are saved and have eternal life and freedom from sin but you miss out on all the other promises of salvation.
The word Lord is one who is part of the aristocracy? Jesus has been called King, Lord, Prince and a few other terms. A Lord is one who has servants. A servant is one who serves or carries out the wishes of the master or Lord.
Surrender is giving in, submitting or relinquishing to another. The servant gives in to the requests of the Lord willingly and considers this submission as a part of his/her station in life.
What does surrendering our lives to Jesus mean in regard to our salvation? Think about this for a moment. What did you do when you first “gave” your life to Christ, when you first believed? Giving in to the pull of the Holy Spirit is when you first “surrendered all.” Your first thought was you were receiving salvation and going to heaven and not hell. The thought of actually giving in totally didn’t enter your mind. When you said yes to Jesus in a personal way you were indeed receiving the total package of salvation. The surrender of ones life to Jesus is our part of being saved and this is supposed to bring about a changed life.
At the moment we give our lives we begin the changing process (Sanctification). We now are on the road toward the promised abundant life. We are still sinners only we have been pardoned from this burden because Jesus set us free. Our sins were paid in full at the cross. The more we surrender the fuller our lives become. Surrendering our lives brings with it cleansing of sin and freedom from our old life Ephesians 6. This is making Jesus Lord!
Reading most of the salvation passages of Scripture it is easy to see that when we receive Christ as Savior we also receive Him as Lord. The surrender of our lives brings with it all the promises of God. As we continue in our giving we come closer and closer toward holiness, 1 John 9. The life of the one who only takes the “being saved” part of salvation pays the consequence of disobeying the commands of being a part of the true church of believers. Jesus is the Lord and we are the servants.
There was a teacher who lorded over her students. She expected each of her students to surrender or give in to her requests. She wanted time to study. She wanted their attention while in class. When the student didn’t obey or surrender there were consequences. Discipline came when a student disobeyed. God expects each of His children to obey His requests. When we don’t obey there are consequences, a discipline or chastisement or another form of punishment.
When we surrender or give our lives to Christ we begin a new life and this new life is under the Lordship of Christ. “Surrendering all” is making Jesus Lord. Finally, submitting our lives to God is not being tied down but is total freedom. “The joy of the Lord” is our strength.
