He wasn’t overly tall, but his strong build, intense dark eyes, and the scar cut across his cheek commanded my immediate attention. In contrast, his silvery hair and gentle smile gave him a fatherly quality that put me at ease. He came to stay with us, along with my youngest brother, during spring break. My kid brother was looking forward to his favorite home-cooked meals and lounging with family and friends. His schoolmate was responsible for twenty-eight churches back home in Ghana.
Being an early riser I quietly slipped through the hallway and down the stairs their first morning with us. I heard him praying as I passed the closed door to his room. I made coffee and prepared for breakfast, but he was the last one down, praying for two more hours. I don’t know how early he started, but this was his practice each morning during his stay.
He told us that in his country the evil is overt. He was accustomed to battling manifest strongholds. He prayed very early, he said, because it was easier when others were asleep. He described the black witchcraft in his country and how God kept him safe while he ministered.
Later in the week I asked him about the scar on his cheek. He said it was a tribal marking. “When you meet anyone in my country, you know if they are an enemy by their marking.” All of his sons had the same marking with the exception of his youngest, who was born after he met the Lord.
He preached at our church during his visit. I can still here him saying, “You must pray!” That was over ten years ago.
After we drove them back to Bible school I set about stripping beds and cleaning up. I walked into the guest room at the top of the stairs and stood still. On the edge of the bed where the soft cotton rug lay on the hardwood floor, the comforter was all wrinkled up from the hours of tears that had fallen and dried there. It felt like holy ground.
“In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there (Mk. 1:35, NASB).
