The father and son put a bag of twine paper and wooden dowels in their nine year old Volvo, got in and headed off for the long two hour drive to the beach.
“I was really hoping for a stunt kite.” the son looked away out the car window and traced the desired bat wing shape in the foggy glass. “So can we make a Delta shaped kite?”
“This time I want to make a diamond shaped kite,” the father said seriously.
“Ok,” the boy sighed. “We will see Newton’s third law of motion and Bernoulli’s Theorem in action today. At least that will be worth it.”
That is my son, thought the father, my brilliant young son, my son who studies aerospace engineering and quantum physics, my son who dreams of visiting outer space.
He thought back to when he first read a Bible story to him. “Virgin birth?” his son laughed, “That’s preposterous! Surely people do not believe that, not smart people, not you or Mom. Right, Dad?”
“Parthenogenesis does occur, and in many species…,” the father had stammered. He was still dumbfounded, and searching at how to respond.
Newton’s law states that for every action force, there exists a reaction force that is equal in magnitude but opposite in direction, the father thought. With every word of God he said, his son would snap back.
“God, if there was one, would not permit the torture and death of his own son, “his son had yelled at another Bible reading, “There is no love in that. How can you call that anything like love? How could that be love for us or anyone?” He shoved his glass of milk, “Why are you are saying ridiculous things.” Why did this happen, the father wondered. Should he not have let him read Steven Hawking who says there can be no God.
They assembled the diamond shaped kite- a simple membrane on a cross and tied on the string and set it aloft. It flew and dove and rose, and the father watched his son’s eyes smile and fill with wonder. They were both intoxicated with the sun and ocean and the steady wind. The son was caught running in uncharacteristic joy. In a state of wonder he appeared to soften a bit in awe of nature.
“It is a miracle that the kite is heavier than air, but flies.” the father winked.
“Bernoulli’s Theorem really is not that complicated,” the son tugs on the string, “but not many people even double or triple my age can understand it. The kite acts as a wing when horizontal to the wind…”
The father stops to look gently at the boy. It broke his heart to break the beauty of the moment, “inordinate and unreasonable self esteem.”
The boy looks away, cheeks burning.
The father looked at him and loved him.”See the cross in the structure of the kite. It links the heavens to earth. It is the only way to link heaven to earth for sinners like us.”
They stood with only the roar of the wind and the flapping of the kite fabric for a while.
“Ok, Dad, I will listen to your stories with an open mind.”
“And heart, son.”
They stood again without words, in the wind that blows wherever it pleases.
