It wasn’t until many years later, after my folks split up; that I actually remember anything. I was spending the summer with my dad and was outside in the yard playing. I can still hear myself saying, “I can do it!” just before attempting to vault out of a tree onto our roof, where my brothers were. All the while they were telling me not to. With the earth now spinning underneath my plummeting body, who knows what was going through my six year old mind. If anything, it was at this point that I realized that I couldn’t fly. I was laying there lifeless after diving into the ground, and my brothers were sure I had died; but, I only suffered a mild concussion. Someone was looking out for me, I just wasn’t aware of who it was yet.
About two years later I recall experiencing a whole other level of adversity. As a kid we would watch scary movies but I had never experienced an evil like this firsthand before. It started out as whispers in my mind and increasing got more volatile. I would lie in my bed and hear multiple people speaking obscenities but nobody would be around. The things they spoke were foreign to me and with voices other than my own. I became inflicted with nightmares and in one of the dreams I was sucked up into a tornado and thrown in to a ditch. When I got up and began running for my life and sought refuge in a church. When I got inside there was a pastor preaching to his congregation. As soon as I thought I was safe I heard a very dark laugh, familiar to me from the voices; and in that moment, the bible the pastor was holding ignited into flames. Standing in his place was what I can only describe as the devil. Mortified by my confession of these visions my mom took me to a pastor for prayer and counseling. There was a battle going on for my very soul and I hadn’t even been aware of it.
In God’s master plan, he knew that it would be that very pastor’s church where I would ask Jesus to be my Lord and Savior. For eight years we attended that church, before a guest speaker had come and shared his testimony, and wrecked my whole belief system. The God I thought I knew, was nothing like the God this man spoke of. He was told he would remain in a vegetative state, never to play music again, he yet, there he stood in front of me playing the most beautiful sounds I had ever heard. Like a siren’s song, I was drawn to God and gave my life over to him. Enveloped by a cloud of peace and a renewed sense of purpose, I was finally free. A nearly sixteen year conflict was settled that day and I would never be same.
