It had been three months since she found out about the illness, slowly eating its way through her heart. She couldn’t keep her thoughts off it, her stomach cramped whenever she thought about it but she could not bring herself to do what was required of her.
Her debts were piling up, she was generally short tempered and irritable. Everything she did was out of spite and vengeance. But through all of this she prayed, waiting and waiting.
Her son noticed the change and kept asking whether she was all right but she was irritable with him as well. He walked on egg shells around her, wondering when she was going to explode again.
Her friends had slowly withdrawn, not being able to take the sarcasm and rudeness, the intentional barbs to hurt them. She had no one to turn to.
She realised that she could not take it anymore. Slowly the tears and mascara ran, making little rivers on her face.
She humbled herself before her God. “I forgive him … for everything,” she said. The tears ran freely now, a release for the agony she had felt over the past three months, the betrayal that she had felt when she found out that he had lied to her, the pain she felt when she saw their wedding picture in the paper.
“Thank you Lord for your forgiveness and peace,” she cried.
Half an hour later she thought about how she probably looked and rushed to the bathroom. She looked at the mirror, and a peaceful face, streaked with different colours of makeup, looked back at her.
“Beautiful,” she said.
