I dreaded Sunday mornings. I am in charge of the sound mixer board for the worship music at my church but I was getting tired of the constant problems and headaches that stemmed from that job. Recently, there had been a constant stream of problems, ranging from the high-pitched squealing feedback from the microphones, crossed wires on the sound board, to watching the senior pastor take notes during the music worship of everything that seemed to be going wrong. And somehow, between rehearsal time and the start of service, gremlins changed the settings on the sound board making the start of the music less than a joyful noise unto the Lord.
The music and singing had always been my favorite part of church, but now it became a chore. Some weeks were OK, but others, well, it was worse than Murphy’s Law. When one thing went wrong, it seemed to set off a chain reaction of everything going wrong.
But, I dragged myself out of bed on this particular Sunday morning, keeping in mind that I was doing a volunteer service for the church and the Lord. I got dressed and headed for the church, always obedient to my task.
Rehearsal went OK this Sunday morning. The levels sounded good, the voices of the singers were rich and in harmony, and the musical instruments were clear and strong. During church service, I couldn’t believe how well the music sounded, full and alive. For the first time in weeks, I was able to prayerfully worship with the music. There was even a point during the service when we were singing, “He is able, more than able…” that I actually had chills. It was a wonderful service and I felt truly lifted up by the Lord. To think, I was dreading getting out of bed that morning!
But then something even more special happened. One of the members of the church handed me a note card as she left. I opened the card and read, “Just a note to thank you for your dedication to working the sound system for our church. It is a ministry of love, and your devotion every week is a blessing to us all.”
As tears filled my eyes, I realized I was the one who was blessed. Now, I serve my church freely, and the bad weeks don’t seem so bad anymore. Doing my job with an obedient attitude of ministry and love changed everything and I continue to feel blessed week after week.
