“And walk in love, as Christ also have loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.” (KJV) After reading this I began to search myself. I began to think of things which have a fragrance that I respond to. A smell that draws me to search out its origin.
I fixed on the aroma of pancakes. Something I have loved since I was a child. This is a savour that I respond to. I compared my reaction to the scent of pancakes to the type of reaction I want to invoke from God. I want to touch him in such a way that he seeks me out, come to where I am, and communes with me.
What I believe the Apostle Paul is saying in this scripture is, we must have the same selfless, dedicated, yielding, and self-sacrificing love for one another that Christ had when he went to the cross. We must not only be those pancakes to God, but also to each and everyone we come into contact with. It is our duty as followers o Christ to sweeten the lives of others, not to leave them with a bitter aftertaste.
When something has a fragrance that appeals to you, peaks both your senses and interest, a joy comes with it. Nehemiah 8:10 reads, “for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (KJV) Think of it this way, a pleasant fragrance can change the atmosphere in your home, it can be uplifting to your mood, and it can change your mind.
The Spirit of God has encouraged me to be that sweetsmelling savour unto the Lord our God. I now encourage you to do the same. Let your life be that pleasant, all inspiring fragrance to all those you meet. Send up into the nostrils of our Father, an aroma of unconditional love, through your words, your works, and your praises to the Most High. Create an atmosphere of Love everywhere you go. That my friend is the greatest fragrance of all.
