He was your average five-year old--rambunctious and full of energy. He would sit in our Sunday school classroom, playing with whatever he could find.
“Noah, sit down and pay attention,” I’d say to him every Sunday. “You’re never going to remember anything I teach.”
“Aw, I’ll remember, teacher.” Then he’d jump up from his chair and find something else to play with.
Somehow, Noah would always remember his memory verse, but he could never tell me what the lesson was about the previous week.
One Sunday, our lesson was about Noah’s Ark. When I announced this, Noah perked up.
He raised his hand. “Teacher?”
“Yes, Noah?”
“What’s an ark?”
“It’s a big boat.”
“Oh, I don’t have an ark, teacher.”
“Yes, I know that.”
“But you said we were going to learn about my ark today. And I don’t gots one. How can we learn about something I don’ts got?”
“We’re going to learn about Noah in the Bible. There are more that one Noah in the world you know.”
“I doubt it.” Suddenly, Noah jumped up onto the table and crossed his arms. “Tell me of this Noah.”
I couldn’t hold my laughter which caused the rest of the class to laugh. As you may have gathered, Noah loved attention. He smiled proudly and stood on the table the rest of the class with his arms still crossed.
A few weeks passed. About three weeks after our Noah’s Ark lesson, Mrs. Renalds asked if I would like to come over to dinner. She told me she thought I’d like to see what Noah was up to.
After dinner, Noah went straight to his room. His banging things around could be heard in the kitchen. So, I decided to investigate. I knocked on his door twice.
“I’m busy!,” he called.
“What you up to, bud?”
“Is that you teacher?” He opened the door. “Come here.”
I walk in to see cardboard laid out all over his floor. Markers, construction paper, and animal cracker boxes were scattered around.
“The news man says its going to rain. I have to build an ark.”
“Why?”
He looked at me with a very serious look on his face. “You’re the teacher, you should know.” Noah sighed. “ I have to save my family from the flood, okay? You can come too. There’s plenty of room with the pigs.”
Suddenly, thunder rolled. Noah ran to the window. Raindrops could be heard softly on the roof.
“Oh, no!” Noah cried. “I’m not done with my ark!”
“Its okay, Noah. Just pray that God’ll protect us.“
The next day, I received a phone call. It was Noah.
“It’s okay, teacher. We don’t gots to worries no mores. God saved us.”
“That’s right. Remember, Noah, God promised never to flood the whole Earth again.”
“Yeah, I remembered that when I saw the rainbow after the storm. God loves me very much, don’t he?”
“He sure does, Noah. He sure does.”
“I love you too, Teacher. And if you ever need an ark, I got one.”
