Looking at the watch they helped her count down the second as ticking away before her phone registered John’s call. Helen and Mirian broke down in laughter waving goodbye for the day.
‘Let me guess, another dream about me?’ she said
‘Just thinking, what a great job you are doing for our community. Not sitting on a high throne like me making money.’
‘Uh, I forgot… you can sell your heart and stop living a life of a prisoner.’
“Seriously! One of us has to carry the life of the community. Since some of you have taken the easy way out, I am left to it. I am a man. Anyways, can you have dinner with me tomorrow night?”
“I will ask the girls first, I owe them a night out.”
“Helen is busy and Mirian has to close off my friends accounts... Get out of your cage. They won’t notice you are not around.”
“Okay then. Tomorrow it is.”
There is never a day that comes without a thought on her mother. Every time they sit around the same table her dad has to remind them they share a blood line and some how Lilas has to be the grown up about it. Her mother is constantly pushing her away and forgetting she is her child. She could not remember how many times she sat by the school gate forgotten by her.
“Mrs. Charles, do you think a mother can hate their only child?”
“That’s not what I will call it dear. Misinterpreted love, not hate. You gave me an ejection, I can choose to see it as you are hurting me or you helping me get better.”
“Oh, that makes sense. Like being cruel to be kind?”
She picked up a pair of red heels for her mother, imagining her elegantly in her black dress and red purse on her social event. She found her mom in the kitchen and decided to leave it in her mom’s office placed neatly in the centre of her huge table. The pink letters she wrote all around it made it look a little childish almost creating a mess on her table. She smiled at the thought of it all and went out quickly. She pause for a moment to say a pray for her family as she always does before she leaves her parents’ home.
‘You should have warned me that mom will be around and dinner, not a function.’ She whispered almost into John’s ear.
‘Let your gut down a little.’
She saw her mother from a distance and wished someone will some how get her out of her sight before the usual happens. John almost did the unthinkable but Lilas stepped on his foot. They stood eye to eye but no words yet, she could not believe she saw a smile in her eyes after exchanging a few humanly words and she put her gaze down to see she wore the shoes she bought her.
‘You have an incoming call. What happened last night?’
She took a long breathe before pressing the answering button; her thoughts raced to her dad’s health.
‘Hello… mom!’
Her friends held hands waiting to hear what was of great importance that her mother would call. The last time she called was over five years back and months passed before they could have a conversation.
“I love you too mommy.”
Her phone rang again; she answered it quickly before they could read the name. She giggled through out the call.
