Is but a few brief bars
In Eternal Symphony’s Opus.
Inaudible to carnal ears,
Each unique note is woven.
Every one carefully placed
In the Master’s score
By the daily walk in the temporal.
One must come to the place
Of stillness of spirit.
Only then can faint strains be heard.
Notes in harmony,
Variations on themes,
Rounds and counter melodies,
They weave themselves
To fit the need
Within the greater work.
Spiritual ears become dull of hearing
By life in a fallen place.
The dissonant drone,
And barrage of cares
Distract with jarring discord.
We do not attend
To our own soul’s song;
So we cannot give ear
To the song of another,
Take note of descent
Into minor key
In poignant silent plaint.
The countenance belies
The dulcet drift
Into soundless notes of pain.
The one melancholic
Hears too well notes of sorrow
Of his own mournful lyric.
‘Tis a beautiful danger
Entwined in its notes
Siren’s suicide lilt resounds.
We fail to hear
Until out of time
An abrupt and misplaced pause
Jars us from
Our preoccupations:
An instrument is missing.
Memory strives to retain
The tune as it fades
We search through words previous sung.
We seek what was missed
In ethereal strains
That haunt in silence forlorn.
This movement is done,
The notes have been played,
And now, too late, we listen.
