I’m feeling blue. This sentence describes a physical reaction of feeling to a psychological state of mind that expresses emotion. Isn’t it interesting that the color blue is associated with feelings such as sadness, loneliness, and depression? What exactly is this correlation of emotion to color? The color blue comes in various shades from bright to dark. The sky can be a bright blue indicating beauty that is causal to good, warm and happy feelings. Then there are days when the sky can be dark blue, sometimes black and gray which immediately changes the mood for most. A dark blue, black and gray sky can alter the course of the day for some and bring peace for others. There is also the bright blue balloon that can bring a smile to a child’s face but then there is a dark blue bruise on the arm of one who has sustained injury.
When we say we are feeling blue; do we mean bright blue like the beautiful sky that makes us smile or dark blue like the storm that is coming or the bruise on the arm that reminds us of pain? It seems most have attributed “feeling blue” to the latter emotion that expresses sadness, depression or pain. People have such a unique way of expressing their innermost feelings through color. More interestingly it is not only the expression of feeling blue that affects mood but also clothing that has a way of expressing how one is feeling. When bright and colorful clothing is worn it seems to spark energy, a smile or good feeling; but when we wear blue or black it is attributed to sadness, darkness or a solemn mood. When some are attending funerals they wear black which is associated to death which expresses sadness, grief and other like emotions. It seems that blue; or at least the blue that most use to describe their state of emotion is one step before black that is used to show and express feelings of sadness and despair.
Blue has been the color to express a sad state of mind and perhaps momentary depression that expresses and reveals that someone is in need of a brighter day, a brighter blue. Perhaps colors are not just meant for crayons after all. It seems that there are some great correlations between color and emotions that can express our innermost thoughts and feelings. Blue’s can bring both happiness and sadness. It is with high hope that most will enjoy the beautiful bright blue that the sky and life can bring. When a situation or storm comes in life that is articulated as “feeling blue” and envisioned as the dark blue-gray sky that brings that a sad, melancholy, or depressed state of mind; let it be just for a moment; then, grasp a hold of that bright blue sky feeling or that yellow sunflower, or the green grass or the blue waters of the ocean and smile. Feeling blue doesn’t have to last but for a moment; onward to the other colors of emotion that will lift your spirit and make your day brighter! It is worth noting that there is Hope in Jesus Christ so don’t spend too much time “feeling blue” when you could be enjoying a rainbow.
