29, 28, 27, 26, 25
Count down on the red traffic light. I sat there in the car tapping a finger impatiently on the steering trying to dismiss the disturbing thoughts of things I may lose because of the delay.
Zoom!
A car on the other lane sped past, the driver so glad of the opportunity to get ahead. I look on, wishing I was the one on the move.
But…
24, 23,22,21,20
The time is still counting down as red as before. This time trying to hum a tuneless song, subconsciously counting the things I could have done with the time.
Zoom!
Another car smoothly passes by and I wonder if the driver knows how lucky he was to be free to move unhindered, if he knew the value of such a gift
And…
19, 18, 17, 16, 15
As steady as ever, this could be the longest time of my life. The radio is switched on and the forecast says a storm is coming. I don’t want to meet the storm. God! I want to get going. Must I wait? Must I?
Zoom!
Again another car goes and I am still here, obeying a red light. I feel stupid doing so. I see people disobeying and moving. I hear the impatient horns but I obey. Heavens! Isn’t it time yet?
Then…
14, 13, 12, 11, 10
10 more seconds to go! I adjust my rearview mirror, taking a look at my self with that opportunity. Taking a quick glance again at the time, I wonder if the wait was worth it.
Zoom!
But this time, the longing has been replaced with anticipation as I know it will soon be my turn and Oh! My! I will make good use of it.
So…
9, 8, 7, 6, 5
I adjust the gear, turn on the ignition key, and push the accelerator twice warming up to take the lane.
Zoom!
A hurrying car sped past. The driver eager to beat the red light as the yellow was almost up. I wondered if he appreciated that 5 second later he could have been trapped to wait.
Ok…
4, 3, 2, 1, 0. Green!
Zoom!
With glee I speed off still trying to decipher the meaning of these 30seconds. What was that time meant to add in my life? What was the essence of the wait? Well, I better get going, perhaps in time I will understand.
Wait a second!
It hit me! Life is like a journey on a lane. Most times we get delayed by events of life and we wonder why. We tend to focus on the speed of others, how fast and far they have gone. We want to get ahead so badly that we think that any delay is denial. We can’t bear the thought of waiting as we feel we are missing something.
But delay is Not denial! The wait can actually be for good. It could prevent a bad relationship, a divorce, a bad career, a bad business choice or partner, an accident and the list could be everlasting. The wait can make one better prepared for what’s ahead.
So…
Red… 29, 28, 27, 26, 25
A delay I don’t like but know it’s mostly likely for my good!
