She felt the warmth of the sun as she lifted her face towards the sky and she knew it was morning. It was difficult for her to separate days from nights since the accident that left her blinded. It seemed like only yesterday that the accident happened but it had been three long years.
The smell of the rain that was pelting her windshield, the hamburger and fries that sat in the bag on the passenger seat of her car, and the scent of the dirty dog she had rescued from the side of the road weeks before all still lingered in her mind.
She never saw the stopped car in the slow lane on the highway until she plowed into the back of it. All she could remember was the deafening sound of silence from the hospital room when she regained consciousness. Fear cut thru her like a knife and she felt an icy chill run all over her as the stranger that said she was her nurse began to read to her the details of the accident as reported in the newspaper. It all seemed like a bad dream and she could feel herself pinching her body to try and wake up.
Hours turned into days, and days into weeks as she began to try and put her life back together. She had to relearn to do even the simplest of tasks like tying her shoes and making her bed. To the girl from the wrong side of the tracks, nothing had ever come easy but this was difficult even by those standards.
The doctors told her that it was possible when all of the swelling was gone and healing was complete that she might regain some of her sight, but it hadn’t happened. For a while she held out hope but had it soon faded. Darkness and fear draped over her like a thick blanket in winter.
She didn’t understand why life was such a challenge for some while others seemed to sail thru on calm waters. But she was determined not to become bitter. She had always believed that there was a reason for all things and that nothing just happened without God’s approval.
She hadn’t really been a religious person in her lifetime but she could remember her mother taking her to Sunday School when she was a child. It seemed strange, but now that she was sightless, she seemed to have total recall of those early lessons she had learned. She hadn’t thought about them for years until now, but the words she had heard, and the Scriptures that she had committed to memory seemed to race back to her mind like a flood.
She smiled as she thought about her mother. She would be pleased that her efforts of seeing to it that the girl went to church were being rewarded even if the circumstances surrounding it were not quite the way her mother would have hoped.
She could remember vividly her mother crying softly with bowed head and eyes closed at the end of the preachers sermon. She wondered as a child what her mother must be thinking in those moments.
Her mother was a single parent in a time when being a single parent was taboo. It had been difficult for her to provide for the girl with only a seventh grade education but she never backed down from a challenge or from hard work.
Her mother could have taken the easy way out and had an abortion, and most would have understood, but she believed that all life was sacred. Only after her mother’s death had a friend confided in her and told her the truth surrounding her birth, and that her life had been conceived from a rape. Hearing the story only made her love and respect her mother more. She wished she had known while her mother was still alive so that she could have thanked her.
She tried with all of her might to remember what her mother looked like but all she could remember vividly was that her favorite color was red. As a child she never liked that color and as a rebellious teenager she despised it. Now though, thru her minds eyes she could see her mother and strangely, she could see her favorite color. Red, the most beautiful color in the rainbow!

I was very interested in your character's now and would have liked less flashback and more of her adjusting to her blindness.
