As quiet as I can, I slip out the door wearing my flannel pajamas and worn slippers. I struggle to not spill my steaming cup of java as I drag my quilt behind me. I am escaping to my private place of solace. A great escape it is. There is not one child’s footsteps heard thumping down the steps. No little sleepyhead is in search of momma yet.
The crisp morning air hints of frost. As I relax into my porch rocker and feel the chill, I pull the quilt around me. The aroma of my strong brew stimulates me even before the coffee reaches my palate. My favorite mug warms my hands.
Just as I’m tempted to think that it just can’t get any better than this, the sun peeps over the hillside to reveal what has been hidden through the night. Luminous rays unveil every shade of red, green, yellow, orange, and brown. My eyes feast on the beauty of the leaves. My spirit soars high above the trees. Somewhere in that clear blue sky is my Maker and I know that He is near.
Reveling in this moment of awe, I hear the creak of the screen door behind me. Reaching for my little one’s hand, I draw him to me. We cuddle under the quilt and rock as we silently gaze at the splendor of the dawn of this day. The small voice of my son breaks the quiet and says, “I love you, Momma.” And I know. It just can’t get any better than this.
