Winter is a warm time to snuggle up with a good book in one hand, a cup of hot chocolate in the other, and my cat keeping my feet warm—three “friends” of knowledge, nourishment, and relationship. The perfect setting is by a window to catch a glimpse of the snowflakes as they float to the ground. As the flakes gather on the ground and sometimes the window sill, they remind me of God’s many blessings that come from above. Some are only for a time and are gone as fast as a melting snowflake, but others stay for awhile like the mounds of snow that gather to create the beautiful picture of not only God’s creation, but also His ability to wash our sins away and make us white as snow.

The howling wind reminds me of how many times in the middle of the heat of Summer I would wish for a cool refreshing breeze. It also reminds me to pray for those I know who are in the midst of difficulties that beat on them relentlessly like the pelting of the cold air that pierces through the warmest clothing, sending shivers throughout the body.

Ice on the sidewalk and road are like the slippery slope of sin that seems so smooth, shiny, and harmless until it trips me up and I fall into its fierce grip, sometimes without a scratch and sometimes causing injury to myself or others. Often it is hard to get up and stand again on ice unless someone helps you up which brings to my mind thankfulness for the many people who have encouraged, counseled, and walked beside me during the hard times in my life.

Winter at times brings a foreboding look as storm clouds gather and people make a dash to the store or bring wood inside for that fire that will feel so good after the work is done. At other times, bright sunshine glistening on a snow covered field presents a beautiful picture that only God can orchestrate for us, which causes me to be in awe of His power.

Taking my morning walk and seeing my own breath on the crisp air shows me I’m human and need to continually rely on the Lord’s strength to see me through each new day and I thank Him for that new day in which I can serve Him. As I take off my boots, place my gloves in my pocket, and hang up my coat and scarf, I think of individuals who have physical limitations, and I’m thankful for the ability to do things for myself and pray for them as they struggle with daily life.

Even as the cold wind causes me to pull my scarf and coat tighter around me, may I draw closer to You. As the snow and ice help replenish moisture to the earth, refresh me with Your Spirit. As You provide me with beautiful scenes of Your creation, may I reflect Your beauty to those around me. As the snowflakes fall, help me to remember all the blessings You’ve given me, and as I shovel the snow off my sidewalk, show me who I can share Your love with today. Just as You have me on Your mind all the time, help me to keep my thoughts focused on You, the giver of Winter. Amen.
