We got off the plane and followed the crowd. It seemed everyone moved in slow motion as we reached the airport lobby. We searched and searched through the many signs being held by guides. I was in disbelief, no shock that no guide was holding a sign with our names. The thoughts began to swirl in my mind. What if he was here and left already? What if he doesn’t come? What if we can’t find our hotel? What if we miss our appointment? What if we spent four years of waiting and thousands of miles travelling to be stranded at this airport? What if . . . And then the calm came with a single thought. God lead us to adopt this child and He fulfills His promises.
More than once God had confirmed His promise that He would unite us with our first child here, eight thousand miles from home deep in the heart of Asia. I took a deep breath and said “Thank you Lord.” I was then able to think clearly and remembered the list of phone numbers I had compiled in case of an emergency. Within moments there was a flurry of phone calls across the Pacific Ocean. We were assured there was a misunderstanding and someone was already on their way.
During the wait, doubt filled my mind but was quickly replaced with the peace of knowing God fulfills His promises. Finally, after an agonizing two hours our guide burst through the doors begging forgiveness for the mistake. Just as God promised, we soon held our precious daughter for the first time. As I held her in my arms, I rejoiced and praised God that He indeed fulfills His promises.
