How far away is South America? It is a second away if I travel by the Internet. It is a few hours away if I travel by plane. My neighbor, Gloria, is from Columbia; a country in South America. From my home in Georgia, South America is as close as my next door neighbor.
I treat Gloria with respect. She is knowledgeable and very helpful. My house was once robbed. Since the robbery, she is now always looking for any unusual activity around my home. Everyday we wave to each other in peace, letting each of us know a neighbor is ready to help if we needed. Termites entered her house and I told her how I prevent termites from entering my house. I treat Gloria with respect because it is wise and mutually beneficial. We need each other for protection, to learn how to handle problems with our homes, and to provide support for each other.
Gloria and I have differences, but we also share similarities. We both want to live in a safe community. We both want to feel we can call each other in times of need. We both want help when problems plague us. When we communicate together we empower each other to overcome our individual problems.
Problems plague our country, the United States, and South America. South America wants to compete in the global economy, but they need technology to compete in the global market. Our country, the United States, can help provide technology to make South America more prosperous. South America wants access to our manufactured goods to elevate their people’s standard of living. Through trade negotiations the United States provides many goods and services to the countries in South America. South America needs the United States technology to help make their infrastructure more stable. Many United States companies have branches that operate in South America to help improve the quality of life for South Americans.
The United States needs South America’s vast resources for our factories and industrial base. Venezuela, a country in South America, sells daily millions of barrels of oil to the U.S. South American grows vast amounts of soybeans and corn. The U.S. needs these crops for both fuel and for agricultural use. The U.S. imports yearly millions of feet of lumber from the Amazon forest. The Amazon forest grows in South America. The U.S. wants to trade with South America because trade is beneficial to the people of the United States.
The United States has a military agreement to help protect South America if any foreign power attacks South America. Both continents have worked together to stop the flow of drugs from one continent to another. The United States needs help in stemming the growth of any terrorist organizations that might infiltrate to the United States borders. South America wants to stem any disruption in their governments and looks to the U.S. for stability. Militarily, both South America and the United States need to cooperate for our own safety and protection. As neighbors, we need to be on watch for each other.
Another similarity both South America and the United States have in common is our belief in Christ. South America was colonized by Portugal and Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries. Through colonization, Catholic missionaries converted many people to the Catholic faith. Through the Catholic faith and the belief in Jesus Christ many South Americans share similar beliefs in family values that we share in the United States.
The United States was founded on the belief in freedom of religion. Our founding fathers had a strong belief in Jesus Christ. Both South Americans and the United States have a strong concept, love, and devotion to the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ said, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with your entire mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:34-40.
South America and the United States are united through trade agreements, economically, socially, and militarily. As neighbors, we are united to elevate the lives of all people in both continents. Love your neighbor as yourself is profane and true for the United States and South America as well as our individual neighbors across the street.
