My destination was just 3 hours away.
I thought of the friends I’d meet,
The places we would visit
The things we had planned,
So much fun in one weekend.
Just leaving the city limitations,
I stopped at an intersection.
The traffic light was red you see
Then I heard a roar next to me.
Beside me was a powerful red Mercedes,
Little did I know it’d been sent from Hades.
The driver looked at me with a smile of disdain
Challenging me to get into the game.
And I thought I’d wipe that smile off his face!
The light turned green and we began to race.
Just then a voice spoke to my heart;
‘ It’s not for you to play this part!’
And I eased up on the throttle,
I slowed down thus ending the battle.
I was ashamed to be so easily goaded
My pride inflamed, my vanity bloated.
As I left the city I began to brood.
After a while, still in a black mood,
I stopped by a station beside the road,
Went in hoping to get some food.
The first thing I noticed was the salesgirl’s smile
I had no choice but to return one of mine.
She was so helpful and full of cheer,
That I bought 2 doughnuts and shared one with her
As we chatted for a while.
And I left there with a smile.
After about 20 minutes back on the road,
Singing a song and feeling quite good,
My left back tyre went suddenly flat.
I pulled over and took out my jack
Many cars whizzed by as I loosened the bolts,
When what should pull up but an ugly, green volks.
The driver walked over to where I was kneeling,
And asked if there was anything I was needing.
Even when I said I was doing just fine,
Insisted on remaining by my side.
And when I was finally done and taking a breather,
He reached into his car and brought two ‘refreshers.’.
We shared the cool soft drinks,
Then he was off with a honk and a wink.
I was now an hour behind schedule,
Then I saw as I went over the next hill,
A wagon, partially in a ditch!
I pulled over and saw a man trying to reach,
Then pulling a big bag out of the trunk
Apparently, he was unhurt
And asked if I could give him a ride down
Just to the next town,
So he could find a mechanic.
Off we went, and would you believe it,
He was a traveling salesman!
And he tried to sell me some business plans!
As I dropped him off at the next city
I marveled at his tenacity.
But I learnt, like him, to be ready
To share the message at every opportunity.
It was now after 5 in the evening,
The sun in the sky was descending.
I had almost reached my destination,
When I suddenly met my racing buddy( from the intersection).
His red Mercedes was being towed,
( Please don’t laugh, though it’s amusing I suppose).
His car had overheated
The engine cauterized and quite busted!
I kept a straight face,
As I passed him thus winning our race!
What’s the conclusion then, the ending?
I did enjoy that week’s ending.
It was a lovely time, I must surmise,
But what gave me the greatest surprise
Was that now many years have gone by,
No matter how hard I try,
I can’t much recall what I did with my friends.
I just know we had a lovely weekend!
But not a day goes by and I don’t remember,
The lessons of that trip in September.
Life is like a car trip as we journey it through.
How are you affecting those who pass by you?
Sometimes the start and destination
Are not so important for meditation,
As the journey from start to station
The lessons and moments and relations.
When I drive by to return no more
What will I be remembered for?
