His youngest son loved to play with this set of plastic cars. He had one yellow convertible, one with blue tires that was his favorite. He also had a temper on this hot day and angrily tossed one of the cars out the window that was rolled down. “Dad,” we yelled “Jimmy through his favorite car out the window and we see it laying there!” When Jimmy realized what had happened, he was not happy and let everybody’s ears know it. John was not too happy when he had to back down that butte narrow road when others were probably coming up it. We got out and got the car and Jimmy was happy again.
A little while later it was time for John to laugh. The mules were very friendly. One, in particular was a little too friendly for Mom, in fact. She sat in the passenger seat up front and this donkey came up to the window, stuck his head in and licked her face! That picture was a Kodak moment. We all laughed, even John after Jimmy’s disgusting attitude. We drove a little further, but for some reason Mom didn’t want to continue. She just wanted to go back to the cabin and wash her face. I wonder if that mule liked the taste of make-up?
Going up that steep hill reminds me of many things in scripture. Our heavenly Father does enjoy spending time with us and does sacrifice time and effort for our sakes. That doesn’t mean he approves of us throwing tantrums or letting our tongue lash away uncontrolled. He did send His son down to pick us up when mankind fell down. He did continue back up (to heaven) and does allow His family to come along with him. God does provide for us whether we see the humor a situation or not at the time.
As far as that long trek up the steep hill, Jesus made the greatest ‘road trip’ of all time. He walked up to the place of the Skull. (In Aramaic – Golgotha) He was put onto the cross and into the tomb. After that he buried our sins on that third day and returned to his Father. The best thing about his ‘road trip’ is that he is allowing his entire family to join him in this joy. I can’t wait, can you?
Oh, sure we could talk about the ‘road trips’ Abraham, Noah, Paul, and many others took throughout history. But not one was foolish to not use a map and a good compass. God is ‘True north!” His word is our roadmap and a light for our path. It is quite simple actually. Keep your focus on God and turn right! (Matthew 25:33 even tells us that His sheep will take the path to the right while the goats go left.) Jesus tells us the way. “I AM the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me.” (John 14:6) Make the time to let your loved ones know this route and I will look forward to seeing you at the top of the road!
