Growing up in a Small Town
Growing up in rural Pa. was quite pleasant, with everybody either related or knew each other, I remember snow storms that would knock all the electricity off and neighbors would bring over generators so keep freezers and refrigerators running properly, neighbors helping neighbors. Everybody had gardens, if neighbors had extra they would share, I remember harvest time all in family would have to pitch in, we even made our own ketchup. Playing ball in the back yard with the dads and all the children of the neighborhood, close your eyes and think of this, the memories of good times are still there. I Remember ice skating on the local pond and swimming and fishing in that same pond in the summer. Sunday was Church and family day, a day with the Lord and a day where all in the family would be there for a sit down dinner after church. No sports on TV, actually you were blessed if you even had a TV. Life was less complicated back in the fifties and sixties. Now we live in a city, your neighbor lives 10 feet from you on both sides, there’s a fence – do you even know your neighbor to speak to them? Everybody is so busy, cell phone in ear, listening to Ipod’s, watching big screen TV’s, always in the house. What has happened to this great country that I used to know, everyone’s in a hurry to get some where, nobody looks at anybody anymore and hey you might offend someone. Sunday’s what does this mean to most people – football – Nascar – sports , entertainment, shopping. I ask you what happened to the family going to church together, sitting down to the meal together and talking to each other – it is what is missing in the USA today, intimacy in the family. God help us.
