Topic: It’s Christmas Day (in the present or living memory) (11/27/08)
Christmas Day is three weeks away, the holiday meals are already set on the calendar but the Christmas gift list still has to be made. Yet somehow there is a feeling that this Christmas Day will be different or maybe it is more of a desire that it will be different. Several young family members will celebrate their first, second or third Christmas. What a joy to see the excitement they have as they anticipate opening presents under the tree. The older family members share the anticipation of the young children, but may not be as excited when they ponder what presents to purchase for each other. Some older family members may feel guilty because they cannot afford to purchase all the gifts they would like to purchase. Others may be upset when they purchase a gift for someone that did not purchase one for them. What a dilemma to be in, yet this dilemma that arises before Christmas Day and on Christmas can make this day different. A gift does not have to be something that is bought, this fact is realized so clearly after spending hours at the mall the night before Christmas Day without finding one gift for anyone on the gift list. A gift can be something that is made, and the best part of a homemade gift is the time the gift maker gives to make it. There does not have to be guilt because the gift maker can use what is obtainable instead of focusing on what is not. Another type of gift to give could be a gift to a charity on behalf of a family member, this gift goes outside of the family to someone else that has a need. The recipient of the charitable gift may never know who gave the gift and can give thanks directly to God. Will this Christmas Day be different? Yes, it will be when time means more than money and meeting the needs of others means more than personal recognition.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Christmas.

Take a look at the repitition of words, and see if there are ways you can use synonyms. For example, you used "purchase" several times within just two or three sentences, and "gift" showed up a lot toward the end.

Christmas will be different for many of us this year, but it'll still be wonderful, I'll bet!
