Emmy awoke to the smells of cinnamon and hot coffee. “It’s Christmas morning,” she whispered to herself. “I really need to hurry and get down stairs, before Charlie does.”
Emmy rolled over and looked at the clock, 7:00 AM. She walked over to the bedroom door and cracked it open a bit, then listened intently, but all she heard was her mom bustling around in the kitchen.
She went back over to the bed where Dan, her handsome husband lie sleeping.
She leaned over and planted a kiss smack dab on his forehead.
“Hey, sleepy head are you going to sleep all day?” Emmy joked. He smiled sleepily, “Not if you can help it.”
They both donned robes and slippers, Emmy brushed her hair and off they went down the hall to where Charlie was sleeping. Dan slowly opened the door to see if Charlie was still asleep. He was. So Dan and Emmy went on downstairs to the kitchen.
“MMM, something sure smells good!” Dan exclaimed, as they entered the room.
Emmy’s mom fixed Dan and Emmy piping hot cups of coffee and then dished up big, soft, sweet. Cinnamon rolls and placed it in front of them.
Dan smiled, “I think I’m going to enjoy spending the holidays with your family. Then he winked at Emmy.
She smiled, her blue eyes twinkling, “Every year as long as I can remember we’ve had home-made cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Christmas morning.”
The three of them turned to see Charlie and Grandpa standing in the door way of the kitchen with Emmy’s dad holding onto Charlie’s hand.
“I caught this young man trying to sneak into the living-room to see if Santa had made his visit.” Grandpa said looking at Charlie.
Charlie being a curious five year old said, “Mommy, why can’t I go see what Santa has brought me?”
Emmy smiled at Charlie, “Well son, you see, when I was a little girl, I had to wait until I had my breakfast and then your Grandpa would read the Christmas story to us. Then we all went into the living-room and Grandpa passed out our presents. So, how about some breakfast Sport?”
“Oh, ok, then can we go see what Santa brought?” Charlie asked.
“We will after the Christmas Story.” Emmy replied.
“But, why do we have to do it that way, mommy?” Charlie asked pleadingly.
“Because Charlie, we are at Grandma and Grandpa’s house and we have to do things the way they do. Besides, I like starting Christmas day off this way. This is the way I did when I was your age.”
“Ok, Mommy, I’m hungry!”
When Charlie had finished breakfast, Emmy’s dad picked up his Bible and began reading the second chapter of the book of Luke. Charlie was fidgety, but tried hard to listen.
“That was a real good story, Grandpa, you read good.”
At that they all laughed, “Well”, Charlie, Grandpa read well.”
Yes Mommy, that’s what I said, can we go see what Santa brought?
His Mommy smiled, took his hand and led him to the door of the living-room. Then she reached out and turned the knob, the door opened and Charlie squealed with delight at the beautiful tree and all the presents.
Right in front of the tree was an awesome, bright, blue bike. It was Charlie’s very own bike.
“Boy, Mommy I like doing Christmas your way.”
Charlie hugged everyone and waited eagerly for Grandpa to hand out the presents.
Emmy smiled, “What a great Christmas. It’s just like old times.”
