“What is wrong with these people,” I scream to the sea beneath me, my arms trembling as I stretch across the great expanse. “Why won’t they learn?”
Wise words of another bridge float along the ripples, whispering , “I am a bridge between two cultures. I must understand and respect both or I will fail.”
I cringe looking again at my skinny bridge built with high hopes. The beams of understanding riddled with holes. The bolts of traditions rusted or missing. The cement of culture refuses to set and the glaze of perspective looks more like mud slapped across the surface. I began to shake longing to crash into the sea, to be swallowed by the depths below me. I have failed. I have been a bridge to no one.
At one side a girl stares at me with bright black eyes and a soft smile. “I want to know,” she says. “I want to know what lies on the other side of this bridge, can you teach me?”
“I cannot.” I look away. “I am no bridge. I have tried to build something beautiful, something that can show you the depths of another world, but I failed.”
“My teacher,” she says stepping closer taking my arm with a smile. “No bridge is made alone.”
