I was getting ready to go down the hill on my cross country skis. I bent down and tucked my head in as I slowly pushed off the edge. All of a sudden, gravity took over and I'm flying down the hill. The air feels cold and my legs not very steady... this is not the time to have unsteady legs...
My family clapping behind me, cheering me on as the snow flies into my face, making it hard to see. I feel like I'm losing my balance, I start to wiggle back and forth and know that I'm not going to make it down the hill. At least not in a standing up position. All of a sudden I hit the ground, my mouth is full of snow, and there it goes down my neck too. Why did I think I could conquer this hill anyway? I take a tumble, and another tumble and my ego and selfesteem falls right down the hill with me. Before I know it, the family dog is helping me get all the cold snow off my face. My family can finally exhale and come laughing down the hill after me. So much for some good oldfashion sympathy...
I reach over for my drink and look out over the water at the beach where I'm sitting. Memories of a cold, snowy day far, far away is sure good to have on a hot day like this....
