We sister's did not get the chance to visit often, so when we could, we made a day of it. Me , I'm Summer, Cherry my oldest younger sister and Lilly, the baby of us girls. Cherry has three boys ages two, four and five and Lilly has one four year old. Cherry and I were visiting at Lilly's house on this wonderful day when my sister's said, that the boy's needed hair cuts. Well..there I was Confident and bold and willing. Lilly gnabbed some scissors from her sewing kit, " these should work huh?" she asked. I said yes...if your cutting butter; laugh out loud... There we were out on the patio, nice breeze blowing, me with my artists tool in hand and the boys lined up for their cool summer hair cuts.
My first victim climbed up in the chair, After the third or fourth attempt the scissors would finally cut, so we all laughed and talked and I cut and we laughed and I cut some more. The beautiful summer breeze continued to blow and I realized as his hair dried the bangs were getting shorter and shorter. The summer wind has blown away his bangs, there they were cropped almost to the widows peak and his calic causing the one side to stick straight up in the air...The wind the wind is doing it, let me get some gel on those bangs. I felt so bad, there was this adorable little man sitting in this chair on his patio and his bangs were being blown away by this wonderful summer breeze. I wasn't laughing then, not hard anyway, I am only allowed to do that now. My little nephew, concerned for my panic and dis-belief, and I am sure sense of humour, knowing I would never do anything against him. He piped up and said that he loved them...he loved them, I couldn't help but give him a big hug. Hearing all the fuss that we made, and trying really hard not to make little "Forrest Gump" feel bad, we quickly got victim number two in the chair." Make his look just like mine" yelled " Forrest".
With much experience now under my belt, laugh out loud.... the other three received "normal" haircuts with " normal" bangs, just above the eyebrow. All went well, I manipulated some gel in their hair after I cut so all their haircuts " looked" the same as Forrests' Afterall, this was the plee.
We melted into dusk out there on that country road, on the patio, with the beautiful summer breeze...Lilly hollars for the boys to come get some watermelon, here they come single file around the corner as if they were playing Follow The Leader. We stood there in awe of these little men, who now had matching bangs, and who was bringing up the rear but Forrest Gump slash Edward Scissor Hands proudly holding in his hand the weapon of destrucion. With a big grin he says I wanted their haircut to look like mine. "How did you get them to go along with your decision to cut off their bangs?" We curiously asked. "I told them they had to cuz, we are cousins, wer'e supposed to look alike, good or bad, right mom?" he said with confidence.
"Forrest" AKA Brendt is in the military now and currently wears his hair shaved all over with the bangs almost to the widows peak, he gels them to stick straight up, and on a breezy day, he will call me and tell me his bangs are blowing away. His cousins have different haircuts but....they will never forget their aunt Summer and the day when "cousins were supposed to look alike, good or bad".
