MY BARREN AUNT
One of my Mother’s sisters was well into her middle age when she first married. Her husband was a widower with grown children. For one reason or another, my aunt never had children.
My brother and I were the only children in the family of twelve including our Grandparents. There were three Aunts and an Uncle, (plus their mates) and none had children.
They worked in a cotton mill, and raised crops. Since we were the only children, my brother and I were spoiled. This is a big comparison to Daddy’s fertile family consisting of two aunts and five uncles (plus all their wives and husbands), which produced fifteen sons and daughters.
My barren aunt loved Ron, me, and her stepchildren as her very own. We would spend summer with our maternal and paternal Grandparents, and she would be so excited when she came home from work. They would buy us coloring and activity books, save us things from the cereal boxes and always gave us something special for special occasions.
They went to church only on Sunday Morning because they lived in the country and their church was an hour’s drive one way. They made quilts and other projects that they could do at home and present to the church.
My Aunt had a loud voice, but she had kindness in it. I never heard any profanity from any of the maternal family. The best thing about her was that she had such a love for others and showed it instead of just saying the words which she also did.
I remember she always had jet-black hair (that came from the bottle) and when she broke her knee, we would travel from Greenville, SC to Caroleen, NC on the weekends, and would clean and cook for the week. Mama would also ”wash” my aunt’s hair and it would be black again. The first time I remember seeing her grayed head, she was so embarrassed. I did not know that she did not have jet-black hair!
I also remember this scripture:
Psalms 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants
You have ordained strength,
Because of Your enemies,
That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
Sometimes I would ”blurt out” things before evaluating them. She had an unusual way with words “I do declare”, “You don’t say”, “Christmas Gift” instead of Merry Christmas, when you were telling her something that was very interesting to her, she would softly say, “I want you to hush” smiling as she spoke.
She and her husband never had children of their own, but GOD blessed them with a gift of loving other people’s children with the love of the FATHER.
We miss all my aunts and uncles. They have given me many memories of good times, and some bad times. But I dwell on the good times. All have gone on to their rewards.
