The glass doors opened gently to show an open hallway. I had never been there before. I had come to see my father; it was his birthday. I was going to give him the perfect gifts, a puppy, that was at home, and a laptop.
That was why I was there, to give him his laptop. Mom had brought me herself, though she couldn’t stay, my baby sister, Elizabeth, needed to taken care of. She was at home with the babysitter, Mom never liked leaving the baby to the babysitter. My dad’s best friend, Mr. William, or John, from work was escorting me to Dad’s office. Oh, and by the way, I was nine then.
My mother let me skip school that day because of the occasion. I was proud to be going. I loved my father, he was my roll module. I couldn’t believe why what happened had happened. I will never forget that day, the day that killed me.
I was walking down the hallway. M dad wasn’t on this level, he was four levels up. John and I turned left and pressed the button by the elevator to go up. The silver doors slid open after only a moments wait. John let me press the button that had the five on it. Pride swept up my spine, heating it as if a heater were at my back.
The heavy doors slid back open without my even noticing we had moved. My father’s office was just down the hallway. My dad looked up from his desk as we walked in.
“Why hello, Sammy!” My dad had said. His eyes had glowed as if a thousand stars were locked in. “And what brings you to my office on such a fine day? I see you have brought your computer with you. Are you ready to do some business?”
“No, Dad. This computer is yours.” I handed him the laptop then. I hadn’t had time to rap it anyway. “Happy birthday.”
I looked outside. The sky was so blue that day. I moved to the window for a better look. A plane caught my eye as it flew by. I walked back to the desk and sat down across from my dad.
Then it happened, the thing I shall never forget. It started as a low rumble, then it grew to a roar. I glanced outside again, my eyes nearly popped out. The plane I had seen a moment ago was headed strait for my dad’s office.
“Oh no.” I must have looked really shocked because my dad and John both looked out the window right then. The floor began to shake as the plane drew nearer.
“Quick, Sammy. Run.” My dad’s voice rose as he grew more panicked. “Get out!” I dashed for the elevator as John and my dad ran from office to office warning the people. As I ran toward the elevator I pressed the fire alarm.
The roar of the plane became deafening. Then there was a loud crack, like a board cracking in two. I reached the elevator, my hand shook as I tried to aim my hand and hit the button for the ground level. I finally succeeded.
The elevator rushed up to me. I climbed in and the door closed. I heard more crashing and screaming above me. The sound of the plane was muffled by the sound of the collapsing building.
The elevator door opened and I shot out. The crashing grew louder; the roof above me began to crack. I fell to the floor and covered my head. Plaster and insulation fell around me. I screamed in pain as something hit my shoulder, my throat filled with debris. I could no longer use my right arm.
I burst through the front door, just as I exited the glass door shattered as something hit them, covering me with broken shards. I looked across the street and saw the other twin tower was falling as well. I couldn’t stop think about my father. Was he okay? Where was he? Before I knew it I was unconscious, lying on the ground buried alive.
In the end my father died. I woke up in a hospital bed four days later. I ended up keeping the puppy myself, I named it Robert, after my father. He was my best friend for the rest of his life. My life was broken after nine eleven, but I am living.
