“Here’s your check,” Mr. Roy.
What a pleasure it was to receive payment for my services from such a beautiful little girl of three. Her blond hair, blue eyes and cheerful face enabled her to warm the cockles of any man’s heart.
I came in contact with Lydia because her grandparents were one of my lawn care accounts. Many times, when they were home, I saw her pretty innocent face peering out the back door. I would stop the mower and she would run into the yard for our hugging time. She reminded me of my own experience with my first granddaughter, Kurstin.
Kurstin was also a special child. There was something very irresistible about her as well. Whenever our eyes met, we couldn’t help but smile at each other. I will never forget the first time she went with me alone. She insisted that I use my truck and take her to McDonald’s. All went well, as we sat eating burgers and fries. Suddenly she said, “GrandDaddy, I’ve got to tee tee.” The matter of differing genders between us raised a question that I didn‘t expect to hear. I had two boys and not daughters, so the situation never came up. The unique pleasure of having daughters was not my lot in life.
I thoroughly enjoyed my first outing with Kurstin but was glad, in a way, that I could return her to her parents. My wife and I had already gone through the experience of child raising and it was time to move into more of an honorarium status.
Kurstin was special not only because she was our first grandchild. My son adopted her as if she were his own. He took her upon himself to spare her from some potentially debilitating circumstances.
As time progressed, Lydia’s grandparents shared some of their lives with me. Their home had become a safe haven for this child. I think it had something to do with addictions to drugs. Because of my son’s love for Kurstin, I could identify with their hurts over this situation. How could any two people not seek help so they could provide for such a loving child? Yet, they fell short of that responsibility that can build one of the proudest heritage one can ever achieve, that of being successful parents.
I lost the yard maintenance account at Lydia’s house but I was proud of the reason. In fact, it brought tears to my eyes. Lydia’s grandparents used every financial resource they could muster in adopting their grandchild. Their own accolades of honorarium would have to wait but that wasn’t important to them.

What a special granddad the MC is, and what special grandparents that Lydia has as well.
Thank you for sharing this heart warming story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. :)
