“Finally.” She breathed as she grabbed her purse and headed for the car pulling up to the curb.
Later that afternoon Sarah looked in her purse to find an empty space where her wallet should be.
“What did I do with it?” She asked, not really expecting an answer.
She mentally replayed her day.
“I went to the doctor, and then I walked next door to the pharmacy.” She thought.
“Then I called Brian from the phone booth…..I took my wallet out of my purse to get change…..” Her heart sank. She knew she left the wallet in the phone booth.
“Lord, I know it was stupid and careless to leave the wallet, but please Lord, let me get it back.” There was $120.00 in it and that’s all the money we have.” Sarah prayed desperately as she sank to her knees by the couch.
She felt sick to her stomach as she dialed her mother’s phone number a few minutes later. When her mother answered the phone Sarah quickly explained what happened.
“Sarah, what are you going to do?” her mother asked sympathetically.
“I was hoping you could run over to the phone booth and see if it’s still there.” Sarah more begged then asked.
“Honey, of course I will, but I am sure that wallet is long gone.” Her mother responded as gently as she could.
She called Sarah shortly after to tell her the wallet was not in the booth. Sarah sank to her knees again and prayed fervently. “Lord, you know where that wallet is, and you know we need that money. Please Lord, help me get it back.”
As she finished her prayer a sense of peace washed over her. She was amazed she no longer worried about the money or the wallet. She knew the Lord was taking care of it.
Two weeks later Sarah was sitting at her tiny kitchen table going over the budget. The missing money had really made things tight, but they had managed to get by. Now she had to find money to register the car. Her husband, Brian, needed to get back and forth to work. Brian had been upset about the wallet and even angrier when Sarah told him about her prayer. He didn’t believe in prayer and he thought Sarah’s faith was ridiculous.
“Well Sarah, maybe God will show up with your wallet.” Brian mocked in disgust.
“In the meantime, I have to drive without a registration.” He stated flatly.
Sarah didn’t argue with him. She knew it would just agitate him further.
She silently prayed. “Lord, we need to register the car. Please help us.”
She stood to answer the ringing phone.
“Could I speak to Sarah Easton please?” An unfamiliar, male voice asked.
“This is Sarah.” She replied hesitantly.
“Ms Easton, this is John King. I am the pharmacist at Watergate Pharmacy.” The caller informed her.
“Yes?” Sarah responded confused.
“Okay.” She said.
“Oh thank you, thank you so much. I will be right there.” She exclaimed as she hung up.
“Brian we have to go to Westgate Pharmacy!” Sarah said in a rush.
“What…. why?” Brian questioned as he started to stand.
“My wallet, a man turned in my wallet two weeks ago and they have been trying to reach me!” She explained as she grabbed her coat.
“Relax Sarah; there will be nothing in it.” Brian said as he grabbed his keys.
“The Pharmacist said it looks like there is money in the wallet, but he didn’t go through the contents.” Sarah said excitedly. “I knew I would get it back. I can’t explain it Brian, but I knew it.” She cried as she ran for the door.
As they left the pharmacy with the missing wallet in hand, Sarah smiled. She looked over at Brian and said. “Now we can register the car.”
“What are the odds of you getting that wallet back with the money in it?” Brian asked puzzled.
“I told you, I prayed.” Sarah gently reminded him.
“Yeah, you did tell me that.” Brian said thoughtfully.
Sarah silently thanked God for the wallet and for returning it in a way that even Brian couldn’t deny His divine intervention.
