I look upon my life of 53 years that have past;
And wonder where it has gone.
There were dreams of how it would be;
And the efforts I put forth.
The times I leaned upon the Lord;
The times I heard His voice.
Then there were times I never asked of Him.
I went ahead of my own accord to do as I saw fit.
Those were the times that I see now;
Were not the best of choice.
To all of those that watched my life;
It looked so right and good.
But good was just one letter,”O” too much;
It excluded Him.
Good deeds are like filthy rags set before The King;
Our best is never what is right; when leaving Him aside.
The best of all the good I did;
Left me empty and alone.
My best is never good enough;
To lay before His Throne.
I see now that I thought of me;
More highly than I should.
I needed Him at my lowest low;
To bring me to my best.
I’ve shed tears to fill a river’s flow;
My head has hung close to the ground.
I’ve grieved and grieved of all I’ve missed;
In doing things my way.
I realize now, it all is passed;
What’s done is done, it needn’t be a waste.
For God can take the heap of trash;
And clean it bright as new.
He’s calling me to lift my head;
So He can wipe away my tears.
He gently brushes my hair aside;
And looks into my eyes.
“Look not back, my lovely child;
There’s grander things in store.
I see your heart in a contrite state;
I treasure that much more.
Than any good deed you lay down;
Before my Holy Throne.
For that is such a gift to me;
My best work has just begun.
Look not back, my lovely child;
Pick you head up and go on.
Go forward to a place of joy.
Where the old is thrown in the sea.
The sea where I remember no more.
I look to hold your hand.
Give no thought to what you’ve lost;
To things you’ve done amiss.
Those things have gone behind;
Never to be given a speck of thought.
Come with me and we shall do;
Many wonderful things of great.
Together what we accomplish;
Will shine for all to see.
Because my child these things you do;
You’ll never do alone.
They will wipe away your tears, your grief;
Never give a thought to what’s gone on before.

I would encourage you to use more imagery, which speaks to the heart in a way that raw words alone cannot.
Keep up the good work!
Ben
I too would have liked to see more of a rhyming pattern, but the thoughts being conveyed are on topic and very meaningful. Thank you for sharing!
I see your heart in a contrite state,
I treasure that much more,
Than any good deed you lay down,
Before my Holy Throne.
Nice writing. :)
