“Checkmate.” Timmy moved the knight into place. “I win.”
Timmy’s little brother, Eddy, pouted. “Rats. You always win. Why can’t I win sometimes?”
“I challenge you to a game tomorrow. Or are you to scared to accept? To afraid to lose to me?” Timmy raised his head proudly.
Eddy snapped his head up. “I’m not scared. I accept.”
“I knew you would.” Timmy sat up and walked to the kitchen. “Hey Mom.” He started when she entered the room. “Guess what? I beat Eddy in five games of chess today. I’m so skilled.”
“That’s nice Timmy. I’m happy you’re so good at the game, but don’t let it get to your head, okay?” Timmy’s mother said.
“What do you think about me entering a chess championship game? I would win for sure!” He said as he jumped off the table and ran circles around the kitchen.
“I don’t think so.” Timmy’s mother said, sighing.
“Oh, please Mom! I would win and you would be so proud of me.” Timmy started to jump up and down.
“I’m not sure Timmy. I will think about it. Now please leave so I may cook dinner.”
Timmy walked to his bedroom and sat on the floor. “I can beat anybody I play against” He said as he picked up his glass chess set. His mother had given it to him for his birthday last year.
Later that evening after dinner Timmy heard his parents talking about him. “Timmy should not enter in the contest.” His mother was saying. “He will be so disappointed when he doesn’t win.” Timmy realized his mother said ‘when he doesn’t win’ not ‘if he doesn’t win’.
“But Helen.” His dad said. “He needs to learn a lesson. Have you seen the way he acts after he slaughters Eddy in a game? It isn‘t good for him.”
Timmy couldn’t stand it any more. Why where his parents talking like that? Of course he would win, and when he creams Eddy what else was he supposed to act like? Darth Vader? Queen Elizabeth I? Was he supposed to mope around all weepy? Weren’t people supposed to be happy when they won a game? Timmy couldn’t understand them.
The next morning Timmy’s mother came in to wake him up. “Your father and I have decided to let you join the chess tournament in two days. So you had better practice.”
“Really!?” Timmy jumped out of bed and ran out of the room with his chess set saying “Thanks Mom!”
Timmy filled up all his free time playing chess against his brother, though always winning.
Finally the day of the tournament came. Timmy was so excited, so confident he would win. It wasn’t a real tournament. It was only a group of kids from around town.
“Alright Timmy, here is where you will play.” His mother got him settled then left. The games started, Timmy won three games before it was time for the three winners of the different groups to play against one another.
Timmy sat down opposite a tall boy his age. The game started. As the game wore on Timmy became less confident with each move. The boy had captured most of his pieces. Timmy realized with a start the boy had left an opening. Timmy slid his piece in. “Check.” He said with satisfaction. The boy made an unexpected move, “Checkmate.”
“No.” Timmy put his head in his hands and cried.

I wasn't sure what Queen Elizabeth had to do with Darth Vador. I was hoping for more details of the tournament.
Good job...keep writing.
