Ah, procrastination has gotten the best of me. Life has many challenges and I have found that this can often cause you to be off track. As Proverbs 27:1 states, "Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth." This is so true, because as we go through our daily routine, it is easy to put off what we should be doing with our time. Are we being good stewards of what God has blessed us with? If you ponder on this you may realize that time is one of the greatest gifts that we can receive form God. I have but to look at my life through a looking glass and realize that procrastination is getting the best of me. It is much easier to think things out on paper without resorting to actually putting our plans in to use. Keeping them on paper will not solve the problems. As I think about my job each day, I try to teach my students not to procrastinate. I recently handed out for the fourth time a list of missing assignments to my students. Some were missing every assignment from the entire semester. I emphasized to them, that this is not a good use of their time or my time. On the other hand, I procrastinate and leave things undone until the midnight hour. I keep thinking that I will have more time on another day to finish up what I started. As I reflect on the scriptures, I feel that there is a message that I need to heed. That message tells me that I should finish up what I begin in a timely manner and not leave it until another day. Leaving for a future day will only compound and put me further behind. Get it done the first time and you will have time to do other things.
A story comes to mind that illustrates this. Juan sat in his chair and nervously played with his pencil as the teacher started the lesson. The lesson was on “math in your daily life”. The teacher began by giving examples of how math can be used in our daily life. Juan still did not respond. Little did he know that the teacher would provide a real life project about how to put the lesson into use. Each student was given a crisp new $5 bill and they were supposed to take 2 days to come up with the best use of the money. However, because Juan was not listening to the details, he only heard everyone would be getting a new $5 bill from the teacher. Little did he know that the lesson was on being a good steward of our money and using it as a good steward. Each student came back the following day with what they ha decided to do. Mariana decided she needed to get supplies to keep up with her assignments, Joellen decided she would plan to use the money for lunch each day for a week. Poor Juan had no plan because he thought he had more time to choose a project. Each student was given a grade for not procrastinating on the project, but Juan was told it would become another one of his missing assignments that he keeps putting off.
|Well here it is the end of the semester and everyone has evaluated themselves on what they can do not to procrastinate in the next semester. The lesson they learned was invaluable because they realized that you can’t keep putting off until the last minute if you are to be successful and get good grades. Time cannot be reclaimed once it is lost.
Get it done right away and you will find time to do other things. As I go back to the verse in Proverbs, I see myself being a better steward of time.
