“Joy to the world the Lord is come, let earth receive her King.” Barely being heard in the overcrowded marketplace, the small group of white people bellowed.
Lilia stood there compelled to listen to the joyous songs. She studied them closely, their animated faces lit up as they sang each song. Who is this Lord? Why hasn’t she ever heard of him?
Maybe they’ll sing that song about sleeping in peace.
She could only imagine what it would be like to sleep in peace. It was hard to sleep at all, in the loud city, a one room shack with two brothers and her mother.
A tall man with light hair smiled at Lilia. When they finished singing, he walked toward her. Her stomach tightened. Should she run?
“I won’t hurt you, dear child.” He slowly walked to her.
“Do you like our music?”
She shook her head quickly up and down, afraid to smile.
“You know we are trying to teach about the Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know who he is?”
Still not speaking, she shook her head “no”.
“Jesus loves you.” He handed her a tiny book.
Lilia never received a new book, like this. Thanks to a small school, she was lucky to be able to read. She feared her mother would not approve of this.
“I can’t.” She mumbled.
The man kneeled down next to Lilia. His warm smile beamed. “I only ask that you try and read it. That’s all. You owe me nothing.”
She took the book reluctantly knowing exactly where she would hide it. She had a place she went to escape; a tall tree. No one even realized she was ever gone, no one cared. Ever-so-often she’d find a small trinket, or some change on the ground. She would take it to her tree to admire it. There was a small hole, high up in the trunk. It was just big enough to put her treasures. She would take this book there.
Through the years, Lilia would go to her tree, spending hours reading this book. She learned about God and Jesus. This book truly became a greater treasure to her, then any of the trinkets she found. She even accepted Jesus as her savior.
Those people who sung such glorious songs in the marketplace that day changed her life. Her outside world continued in turmoil. Thanks to these Evangelists, the inside world of her soul changed.
