Sunday School. SUNDAY SCHOOL!
What productive working stressed out adult even thinks Sunday School is a valid priority in today’s world. Surely, God understands my schedule and the pressures I live with. I try to send the children to Sunday school but they are so bored and against it and I’m afraid without me there that troubles of some roomers I’ve heard will get them there as if they were unattended on the street. Hmmm – I just don’t know how to keep all this together when Sunday is not even a day off for us anymore. It is so hard to keep our career tracks going steady, if not even upward. And the kids are into so much lately we all barely see each other in one place during the whole week. Oh, I wish I had a decent job that would allow some home time…and for Joe too. No chance for that in this so competitive world I just don’t know anyone that could open doors like that for me…..
Just then the sound of the garage door distracted Addie from her thoughts. She noticed that Joe’s car wasn’t there again. He has his own work stresses since they closed three west coast offices. No one seems to know if the staff will be cut or just absorb more work here in town. She was unaware that her thoughts were heard. The Lord’s ear was sitting on her shoulder since His new worker in Adddie’s life – Elsie Crane – made such a bold call. The Lord was very interested in Addie’s self talk and especially when she denied having friends to open doors for her.
I’d better not let Joe know about the Sunday School thing. Seems
as though we both were prouder and happier in our more involved days.
…Maybe this bigger house was not the answer to our dreams.
Joe Jr. met her at the door and announced he had already eaten and his homework was done. He passed her by that quickly with his basket ball under his arm and wave her off when Trish rolled her eyes and said she too had eaten. Trish rolled her eyes again at the homework question. “It’s just too hard for me ,mom.” I need help.
Addie’s stomach growled but she was saved from hunger when Joe’s car drove into the garage.
“Hi honey, sorry I’m late. What’s for supper?”, was Joe’s greeting.
“You and I are for supper – here or Pete’s Place?” she said then whispering a promise of help to Trish.
The Lord was still listening because He had sent a similar message to Joe by Mitchell Crane, just hired by the church to be Youth Minister in hopes of getting back the kids and their parents to Service and Sunday school.
Joe brought the subject up that Addie wanted to keep to herself.
“What did you say Joe?”
“I put him off. I just can’t see how we can right now,” he said.
“But,” he added, “I remember something we promised God and ourselves at the kids Baptisms.
“Oh, Joe I’ve been pushing that promise far back and I have felt so guilty in my thoughts tonight.” Addie said and continued, “You know we’ve let our attendance at Service drop too.. and the way we always used to say Grace at meals and so much more. When we get home do you want to call the Cranes and say yes to Sunday School or should I.”
“Let’s get on the speaker phone – I have a feeling that was some Devine Encouragement involved here. And I’m anxious to meet these two new members – and thank them and the Lord for keeping us in the loop.”
