People in this world have such a limited focus. Before the end of the year comes people are thinking about what ‘next year’ will bring. There are many celebrations over the upcoming year, parades, and even much of the workforce stops on that day. Resolutions are made with good intent, but many are broken before the first day is over. Then many will say, with a laugh, something like “I guess I will have to wait until next year now to make those changes.” My question is, why?

Let’s break it down. Hypothetically speaking, say that you had to clean 365 rooms in a house or complex. Besides unrealistic, it would be rather difficult wouldn’t it? Now, suppose you only had to focus on cleaning 52 and were given six days in which to do it. That would be better, but still more than most people would want to tackle each day. What if you were told that you only had to clean one room per day and never the same room again for the entire year? That still means you are going to clean 365 rooms in the year, but only focus on one per day. I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but the purpose of a hypothetical situation is usually to make a point.

Rather than make a slew of resolutions you intend to make changes to all at once and quit when you get tired of focusing on all of them, try something else. Forget that the calendar starts the new year on January 1. Start your new year today. Focus on one thing in your life that you want to improve on and work at it today, such as ‘time management’. Tomorrow, work at improving in another area while maintaining the discipline you started the previous day. By the time the end of the year comes, instead of thinking of what you want to change, celebrate those things that you can look back and see that have changed. (Because you started.) Then focus on one thing to change at on Jan. 1st. Let your new year be more like a fiscal year, which starts and ends according to your time schedule, not the annual calendar.

You can do the same thing in reading the Bible. If today is the 13th, read the 13th chapter of Proverbs or Psalms. You don’t have to wait until June 1st or wait to read the entire Bible through starting on January 1st. God didn’t wait until the first to make man, but he did start with His Creation on the first day. I’m glad He didn’t wait for a new year to start to make me. Aren’t you?
