When I think of someone who is emotionally calm I think of someone whose sky is falling, but they are calm; while others experiencing similar problems are running around, screaming and emotionally a wreck. Now, I am thinking of a certain man named Stephen found in the Book of Acts (chapter 7) in the Bible. While being stoned to death he calmly calls upon God to receive His Spirit. He remained calm. I am telling you right now, if I was being stoned to death, I think I would be running for my life, picking up stones, throwing them back or something. Would I remember to call upon the Lord? Would I remain calm?
I have been married for over thirty years. I have had plenty of times when my sky was falling. I have never been stoned or persecuted. There were times I thought God was persecuting me. So much was happening around me, I was sure I was being persecuted. In one year alone, we had my grandfather pass away in February, my brother committed suicide in June and my husband's grandmother pass away unexpectedly in October. In one three year span, I had a mother-in-law die from cancer, two years later my mom died from Alzheimer's and the following year on Christmas Day my father-in-law passed away in our home after fighting cancer for five months. Earlier in our marriage we had given birth to a little boy. After spending six weeks in the hospital we buried our son the day after Thanksgiving. This is only a small glimpse of our lives over the last thirty years. I share this with you not so you will feel sorry for me, but to let you know there is hope and yes, in the middle of calamity you can remain calm.
I am not talking about the type of calm where you bury your head in the sand and pretend nothing is going on around you. I am talking about the type of calmness you experience when things are falling apart around you, and yet you have an inner calm or peace about you.
When others see you are being calm in the middle of all that is going on they have to wonder where it comes from. For some it may come from abusing alcohol, or drugs, or a cigarette, but for me it comes from knowing who is in control of my life. Over the last few years I have learned to “fully rely on God” for everything. I have learned to lean on Him, when I did not have the strength to lean on anything else. I have put all my problems, trial, temptations, and discouragements in a basket and handed the basket over to Him. The more I have allowed Him to take control of my life, the more I experience calmness in my life. There is a song we sing in our church titled, “Because He Lives” (Because He Lives Words and music by William J. Gaither © 1971).Part of the song goes, “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, All fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future life is worth the living just because He lives. ...”.
Yes, because I have the confidence God is my Lord and my Redeemer I can remain calm. You can too. Just allow God to be in control of your life. Fully rely on God for everything and you will experience that same calmness, even when your sky is falling.
