In thinking about being “fearful,” many things came to mind. My battle with cancer is at the top of the list. There’s always the fear of recurrence. My children’s health and safety now that both are off at college is another thing. We’re empty-nesters with very little control over what’s going on in our children’s lives when they’re so far away. There are always worries about health, finances, my parents’ health, and more.

But truthfully, right now, I am fearful most about: Physics! I am a returning college student, after a nearly 22 year gap between college classes. I am the only older student in any of my classes, and sometimes I feel like I’m insane trying to go back and finish this degree! I will finish in May, so I only have this semester and next to go. Yet, this semester’s classes are challenging. Physics and Speech to name two.

It may seem silly with all the greater problems in the world, or even in my life, but what I am most fearful of right now is getting through these classes. Do I really have what it takes at over 40 years old to handle the workload, and the learning? Is my brain still functioning in that capacity? And public speaking? It doesn’t get any easier the older you are.

Some days I really battle to keep pushing forward to my goal of a college degree. I hope the challenge will be worth it. I believe it will be. Because I believe God is always at work in all things, even those we’re fearful of.

One positive thing already is that I can relate to my kids pretty well, even though we’re at different colleges. We at least have some common ground.

As I pursue my career in writing, I know I’ll need the discipline, stamina and knowledge that I’m learning in school right now. There’s always a purpose. I need to remember that when I’m fearful that God is still with me, whether I’m battling cancer or my own self-doubt. I saw a quote recently that really resonates: God doesn’t give us what we can handle; God helps us handle what we are given.
