Topic: Fearful (08/23/07)
Looking back over my life like one looks over their shoulder to see where they have been it seems to be a long trail through hills and valleys, much of the time with me being fearful. In retrospect, most of the time I wore my fearfulness like a warm cloak. It kept me safe from finding out who I was in Christ and what I could truly do. As long as I stayed wrapped up in fear I was protected from God given opportunity. I was a prisoner of my own making, unable to set myself free but I learned a few things while traveling through those times.

I found myself missing out on what life had to offer. Every gift that I could have been to someone was lost somewhere out on that trail because I failed to see that all the gifts God had given to me were so that I could share them and give God the gift of using what gifts He had already given me. My life could have been so much richer had I just moved beyond being fearful.

That trail of my journey through life is scattered with opportunities left lying unused along that path while I continued to pack my fearfulness with me. It came in handy when I had an opportunity to try something out of my comfort zone. It became a shield to protect me from God given desires and gifts until little by little God gave me courage to replace my fearfulness.

Courage doesn’t grow unless there is something to overcome, like being fearful, and being fearful is what God chose to use to build my faith and courage to develop the gifts He has given me. So, little by little, in spite of my tendency to be fearful, I find myself timidly trying those things that are good but I have been too afraid to try.

These days I don’t see as many things lying by the side of the trail, cast away. On those fearful days, I look at God a little more, talk with Him and then I step out finding out that most of what I afraid of doesn’t have to determine who I am or what I can do, for the Lord has taken that which held me back and turned it around for His glory as I am released from being fearful to being courageous in faith.

the "warm cloak of fearfulness" that was very descriptive and also very familiar too me. I like how it is so encouraging to take those small steps forward.

This devotional is very nice.

You may want to have a stronger opening and make some of your sentences shorter.

This is a great start. Good job.
