The hotel porter looked even more uncomfortable, “Suh, I am sorry, but they tell me, car here another fifteen minutes, suh.” he apologized.
Bill sank into the plush Turkish-style day bed of the hotel lounge, with a general air of dissatisfaction. What else could he do but wait. There was no other option available. But all this waiting around was irritating him. First he had to wait at the airport when he flew in the night before, and no one there to welcome him, but the hotel driver who arrived ten minutes late with an excuse that he had to help out in some emergency back at the aid center.
Really, everyone was very disorganized! Bill was going to have a word with the area supervisor about this. As one of the founders of the humanitarian aid agency, he ‘handled’ the more glamorous side of things, indulging his benefactors at glittering fund-raising events. The closest he ever came to a food line was when viewing the regular video updates from their centers around the world. He only came on this visit because he couldn’t find anyone else to send.
“Suh!” The porter’s voice startled Bill out of his reverie. “Suh, your car now here. Please come!”
Well it’s about time, thought Bill, only to be plunged into despair when he saw the ‘car’. It wasn’t a car, it was a wreck! If this was someone’s idea of a joke, it was not funny!
Feeling sorry for his designer suit, Bill slid in beside the smiling driver, who had introduced himself as ‘Jimmy, suh!’ His entire luggage was cramped in the backseat, since the boot refused to open. He will definitely have a word with the supervisor!
“No worries suh” smiled the driver, “Jimmy will get you there.” And he did.
The first sight that greeted them was a seemingly endless line of people. Men, women and children, some seating, some standing. The head of the line disappeared into one of the huge tents dotting the area, all emblazoned with the agency’s logo.
“Well, hallo there Bill!” It was Terry, the area supervisor. “Hope you didn’t have much trouble getting here.”
“Yeah, I need to have a word with you about that!”
“Sure, but let’s get inside first.” Terry replied, leading him to one of the tents. “Trouble with the local rebels last night, trying to steal food and medicine from here. Had to get outside help just to keep them away. There were a few injuries, and we’ve had to send them in our vehicles to the local hospital”
“The whole thing has delayed our operations here today!” he added. “Sure am glad that old Jimmy there volunteered to come pick you up. Yeah, that old car is his pride and joy. But anyway, what was it that you wanted to talk to me about?”
“Oh, er…nothing!” mumbled Bill, with a very sheepish look on his face.
