“Mando, I’m only eight years old and mom told you take care of me because she’s working, I’m telling on you!” said Junior.
“Look Junior, I won’t let you out of my sight, but its time you walk by yourself to the boy’s club, it only 6 blocks away, its day light, and its summer time, besides your annoying to walk with.”
Junior remembered the news reports on the six o’clock news that his neighborhood is the most violent place in the City, and he personally witnessed the occasional street scuffles, the rowdy drunks, and the constant blare of the police sirens.
“Mando, I don’t want to go by myself, I’m afraid.”
“Junior, you have no choice because I’m heading over there now, you can stay behind or run ahead of me across the street.”
Just then Junior looked up and saw a white pigeon fly over him, and it triggered his memory from a Sunday school lesson several weeks ago. He was required to memorize Psalm 23 particularly, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” He remembered his Sunday school teacher’s explanation, especially when she said, “God will comfort and protect you in your most fearful times, that’s why he has a rod. It guides you, it disciplines you, and He uses it to fight off the wolves.”
Junior looked his brother in the eyes and said, “My real big brother just told me he will protect me when I walk alone, but I’m still telling mom when we get home tonight.” So junior made it safely through the 6 city blocks to the boy’s club, and his confidence grew in the Lord.
