“I know you are my friend,” Melody said with a curse under her breath.
“I just want you to know that since we were in kindergarten, you have been like a sister, I really cannot stand to see you hurt like this,” Alexis said holding back her tears.
“I remember how you were the first one to walk up to me on that big playground at Garfield Elementary and ask me to be on your kickball team.” Alexis said.
“I know you are my friend Alexis,” Melody said, “And I know you are just trying to help, but when I stopped going to church with you, I realized that I just wasn’t suppose to believe in Jesus. I think maybe I was born to just do wrong and never be loved.
Maybe you should just strop being my friend, I know your Mom would like that.”
“How could you say that,” Alexis asks. “Melody she loves you, and she can’t stand to see you hurting like this either.”
“I imagine she likes to compare me, to her perfect daughter,” Melody yells and starts to cry.
“No,” Melody starts but is interrupted.
“She probably loves to hear you tell her how many problems I have,” Melody shouts.
“No, she hurts just as I do,” Alexis says.
“Why,” Melody questions, “Why would she care what happens to one of your friends. Why would she care if I had a mom and dad that cared, or what guy I was dating? I would think she would have enough to do, guiding her perfect daughter.”
“Wait a minute, I am not perfect and you know it, I have made many mistakes,” Alexis said.
Melody stood and walked over to her computer and clicked the mouse.
“I do not know,” Melody, says, “I cannot see how anyone could ever love me after all my screw-ups.”
“Melody I think you are being too hard on yourself,” Alexis says.
“To hard on myself. How would that be, I come from a house were my mom and dad fight all the time. No guy wants to date me after what Brice went around and told everyone, which you know are all lies. My grades are terrible and last week when I talked to Mr. Douglas about going to college, he just laughed at me and said maybe you should get used to saying, do you want fries with that.” Melody said as the tears came faster and her voice softened.
“We both know Mr. Douglas is the worst guidance counselor ever,” Alexis said.
“I know, but you know since we were old enough to know what college was about, I wanted to go.” Melody sobbed, “I want to be the first one in my family to finish college and get a good job.”
“You can still do that,” Alexis says, “You just have to stop staying out so late and change your attitude.”
“My attitude,” Melody yells! “Everyone that I have ever loved, Mom, Dad, Brice, and sometimes you, have abandoned me,” Melody argues.
“Me,” Alexis says with an unusual defensive voice,” What happened to the girl who invited me to go to Sunday school, the girl who convinced me at the youth rally that Jesus loved me, and held my hand as I walked that aisle to be baptized? Melody I miss that girl, I miss the smile, the feeling of love that you radiated,” Alexis says.
“I do not want to hear that,” Melody yells! “I was wrong,” Melody yells and turns to Alexis with tears streaming down her freckled cheeks.
“How could you have been wrong,” Alexis asks, “Jesus loves you and he knows how you are feeling. He is there for you, all you have to do is reach out for Him and He will be there to comfort you. Please Melody, please! Ask Jesus back into your life. I know you want to feel better and I know everyone has disappointed you. You taught me, after I accepted Jesus that he would never leave my side, why have you given up?”
Melody stands trembling, tears running down her freckled face, “Why would he love me after all I have done, why?”
“Youth group was a lifetime ago Alexis,” Melody says, “Please do not bring that up.”
“Melody why are you so willing to give this lifetime away to Satan,” Alexis asks. “Why?”
