immortals and the Immortal

we hoist ourselves up, we lift ourselves high
we take not humiliation, we’d much rather die
but how could we fail, we infallible youth
who could challenge our rule; teach us the Truth?
like olympians of old, we call ourselves gods
fickle, unfruitful, and always at odds

we’re so strong they can’t bring us down
forgetting the King, we just take the crown
so convinced of our own immortality
forgetting our Creator, we miss eternity
so long, we’ll be fine by ourselves
Father no more; our sin now delves

oh no stone can break our bones
but our dying souls let go silent moans
and no knives can pierce our heart
too hardened now, we set ourselves apart
good Lord, no words can bring us tears
but alone in the dark scowl our deadly fears

oh how cunning and clever
pleasure quick but pain forever
oh but the feeling sin gives
but in our burning hearts our deadly guilt lives
such is the price of such simple things:
only by his death a new life the Lord brings
