Today, as he observed their playfulness, his eyes fell on something new and unusual in the yard. It was white and fluffy, and partially hidden beneath the snowball bush that marked the border between his yard and theirs.
He stepped out onto the porch to get a better look. The children noticed him and they stopped playing. Sam, the oldest, said, “Hi, Mr. Brown” but Mr. Brown didn’t answer this time. He just kept gazing into the snowball bush.
The children walked up to the porch beside him and peeked around to see what had caught his attention. He cautioned them with a “Sh!” They sounded more like snakes hissing than children as they all shushed each other at the same time.
He walked closer to the bush and peered under a limb overflowing with white snowball blossoms. The children silently and curiously tiptoed behind him. By now they had seen something new and usual in the bush, too. Ginger, the most outspoken of the group, could not hold her curiosity any longer. She asked, “What is it?”
Mr. Brown crouched lower and stared into a pair of bright red eyes staring right back at him. Under the bush was a very scared bunny.
The man spoke ever so softly to the bunny while he reached out his open hand to coax the bunny to come closer. “Sam,” he said, “will you please go to the refrigerator in my house and bring me a carrot?” Sam returned quickly with the biggest carrot he could find.
As the man placed the carrot on the grass and stepped back, the bunny stopped shivering and sniffed the air. He watchfully moved near the carrot. The children giggled with joy as the bunny wiggled his pink nose and began to nibble on the carrot.
Mr. Brown reminded them to keep as quiet as possible so they would not frighten the little bunny away. The children whispered excitedly among themselves. Some said, “He’s so cute.” Others said, “He’s so scared.” Another said, “He’s all alone.” Ginger said, “What are we going to do with him?” Sam suggested, “Let’s keep him as a pet.”
Mr. Brown said, “Why don’t we make him a nice home right here in the yard? He will decide if he wants to stay or not. You may feed him when you come out to play and maybe he will want to stay.”
The children nodded with delight. They liked that idea. They were happy to have this new little friend and they wanted him to feel welcome.
Ginger said, “He has to have a name. What shall we call him?”
Sam answered, “Snowball is the only name for him because he looks like a big snowball and Mr. Brown found him under the snowball bush.”
The children squealed their agreement while the bunny carefully finished his carrot snack. Snowball had found a new home.
