Topic: Christmas (04/25/05)
One of our family’s favorite Christmas traditions has to do with our little wooden nativity. Each year when we put it out after Thanksgiving, we put the three kings in a different part of the house and then they travel toward the baby Jesus, so that by Christmas morn they can join the shepherds at that most holy place. I considered how their passage resembles our own.

As the kings encounter something else along the way the idea is that the object (a toy or whatever) joins the pilgrimage. We find other believers in our quest for Christ as well. This brightens our journey and perfects it. We aren’t meant to travel alone. We find Jesus with others and in others.

When my girls were young and not so busy, the kings took a step each day. At times our own faith journey takes that route. But now that they are teens it seems the kings can go forgotten for days and then take a giant leap to their next stop on the way. The manner of progress is different, but they still find the baby Jesus in the end.

Last year, I watched a couple of young boys in the morning before school. Now the kings encountered some hardships on their trip. After being kidnapped and even thrown over the stair rail falling countless feet, gentle hands would take them back to the path that led them to Jesus. How many times have we been torn away and then carried back by God’s own gentle hand?

When we choose to follow Christ, we aren’t instantly there, it is a journey. Each journey is distinct, with its own pace; with its unique hardships; and with the love of others along the way. I thank you for being a part of my journey.

This was not only well written as the story unfolded beautifully, but what a wonderful way to teach the child the journey that took them to the Christ child. This was a thought I had never thought that much about as I put up my own nativity in the past. thank you for a wonderful new way to teach children about the journey to Christ. Also, I loved the comparisons you made a long the way in how our journey is often the same

This was a great little piece. I love that idea with the wise men. I had to laugh out loud about them being kidnapped and being thrown over the railing - I know about those young boys! They do like to be rambunctious, don't they? And I too liked the comparison with our own journey - beautiful and thought-provoking!

Loved the line how their passage resembles our own. I thought of the verse in the Bible that tells that the wise men went home a different way. Beautiful job!
