We all know the story of Jonah and the Whale but lets look at how the story begins, before Jonah was thrown into the sea.
In this small book of the Old Testament, chapter 1 verses 4-16, you see how God can take a situation and change many lives.
Jonah disobeyed God. He ran from Him. But as the story unfolds, you can see God is doing something great.
God sent a powerful storm to shake things up. The men on the ship began to cry out to their gods but nothing changed. They were afraid. They started throwing things overboard so the ship would not sink, much like we do today to stay afloat in our lives. When storms hit we start finding things to eliminate, people, homes, friends, family, whatever we think may cause us to sink.
The men went in search of Jonah. He was below, napping, of all the nerve, this man was taking a nap and the rest were in fear for their lives.
Jonah knew why the storm came upon them. The men drew names to see who was the root of this problem. Jonah’s name was drawn. He told the men his story and told them to throw him overboard and the storm would stop. Jonah knew God was after him. He was trying to get his full attention.
What happened? The men threw him over into the sea and the storm ceased.
The lesson we learn from Jonah is, “don’t run from God.” The lesson we learn from these men? “Even in someone else’s storms, God can change our lives.”
After the storm stopped, the men feared and believed in Jonah’s God! And what an awesome God He is!!!
