Sound familiar? The saddest piece of advice Debt ever gave to me was that if I wanted to buy something for myself, I should charge it. After all, I will find the cash to pay my bills, but I will never find the cash to spend on myself. Oh, such pearls of wisdom coming from my “faithful friend”. Debt and I go way back. We’ve known each other for years, but lately I’ve noticed he is getting a bit jealous. I’ve been spending more time with God and less time shopping for those “deals’ with my credit cards. Debt noticed this change in me and he keeps trying to steal me away from God with the temptation of those great “deals”. The funny thing is, the more time I spend with God the less I want to go shopping for those “deals”. I really don’t enjoy it anymore. The rush of that “deal” seems to be slipping away, but what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t go shopping with the girls?
It’s a girl thing so that makes everything all right. How easy it was to forget that while I saved $400, I just spent $100 which may have been set aside for my rent, my heating bill, food for my table, money I intended to put into my child’s college fund or rather, money I really did not have at all. No worries, because whoever saves the most, wins! Right?
STOP right there. Isn’t that just like the wicked little devil that he is to beguile you into thinking you need those cute, delicious pair of sassy shoes? You and I have just been indoctrinated into “The Debtor’s Guide to Shopping”. Satan’s little worker of iniquity, also known as the "deal" but better known as Debt, steals our money, he steals our time, he steals our energy and most of all he steals our peace of mind. Though, he doesn’t really steal it from us because we freely give it to him time and time again. Debt entices us to shop all we want and buy all we want for there are so many "deals" out there and we deserve it. We work hard and we should not let that spectacular “deal” pass us by, because there won’t be another “deal” like this again.
Let’s not be fooled anymore by this worker of iniquity. He is no friend but rather, we need to recognize him as a foe. John 10:10(a)(KJV)states: “The thief commeth not but for to steal, to kill and to destroy.” Debt will do just that and his method of operation comes through the enticement of a great “deal”. When we start answering and responding to the call of Debt how are we able to answer and respond to the call of God? We cannot serve God and money at the same time. How can we help others in need when we find ourselves in a constant state of indebtedness? Debt creates such bondage that when you do have a little extra to share, Debt is right there with his hand out first and pushing his way to the front of the line. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to kick Debt to the curb. Won’t you join me?
Next time you and I go shopping, lets resolve together to leave Debt behind. Lets say, “No” to this modern day Babylon and avoid those shopping malls.
