“Come on! I thought you wanted to get into shape, you’ll have to keep going.” Jerry shouted back at Paul as he stopped just a few yards ahead to wait for him. They had only been jogging for no more than ten minutes.
Paul regained his composure and walked slowly up the trail to meet his friend. “Jerry, you’ve got to remember that I’m not as fast as you are. I want to get rid of all this weight, but it’s just too hard!”
“At least there is a nice breeze here to cool you off.”
“Yeah, it is beautiful here and the breeze really does feel great, but it’s hard to enjoy that when you are working me like a plow horse.”
“I told you that the state park had a good walking trail that would be great for your first day of exercise, and I also told you that losing weight would take a lot of hard work. Do you remember?”
“Yes, I remember, but I don’t know if I can even do this. Is it really worth it?”
“You know that it’s worth it, otherwise you wouldn’t have asked me to help you with an exercise plan. Here, let’s sit down over there for a minute.” Jerry said, spying a wooden bench just ahead.
“Paul, this morning reminds me of something that took place in my life several years ago.”
“Really, what’s that?”
“Well, when I was seventeen years old, I accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour. From that point in my life I knew I needed to make a lot of changes in order to live a happier life in God. At first it was really hard to adjust my lifestyle. I was accustomed to doing worldly things that pleased my flesh.”
“So, how did you do it?”
“I prayed hard and put all my faith in the Lord. It wasn’t easy but the results of having a happier life, walking in tune with God, was well worth it. It was just like this new exercise plan that I am trying to help you with. At first it will seem really tough and you will probably want to quit many times, but the results of a happier, healthier life are well worth it!”
“Wow, Jerry! You always seem to know the right thing to say to get me headed in the right direction again.” Paul said while getting up from the bench and stretching. “Come on! Let’s get back out there and give it another shot!”
