(A poem of reflections on climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, East Africa)
I saw Him …
in the faces of the children for whom we climbed,
countless, nameless young souls too sick, too vulnerable, too lonely,
too robbed of childhood joys and innocence,
and for them Jesus died.
I saw Him …
in the rain forest,
flush with downpours, a shroud of lush, green foliage,
enveloping sounds of insects, birds, monkeys and falling rain,
send your heavenly showers, Lord, down on me.
I saw Him …
in the approaching dusk,
waves of fog encircling and girding the mountain with silence,
blotting out the closing rays of sun,
but not His presence compassing me about.
I saw Him …
as I did climb,
through varied landscapes, changing climes,
flaming flowers, soaring senecios, lofty lobelias,
all nature a portrait of His signature divine.
I saw Him …
in the rainbow at day’s end,
foretelling His promise to not forsake me,
an arduous climb endured, a test of character for sure,
He was my Guide and hovered o’er me as blissfully I slept.
I saw Him …
in the saddle,
barren lunar landscape, inhospitable to life,
wanton winds raking from peak to peak,
Holy Spirit, come and blow upon my soul.
I saw Him …
in the midnight hour,
when at strength’s end, and yet a harder climb ahead,
my diminishing reserves I tallied and knew I needed more,
yet in my weakness was His strength made perfect.
I saw Him …
in the blush of sunrise at eighteen thousand feet,
the sky His canvas,
His strokes of peach and coral awakening a faultless blue,
and then, a gilded, copper sun heralding the morning.
I saw Him …
in the final thrust,
an indescribable moment in time at nineteen thousand feet,
white capped peak of gleaming snow and ice, ethereal beauty,
His creation sang His praises and shouted His glory.
I saw Him …
at the summit,
each oxygen depleted breath consuming my strength and will,
my frailties driving me closer to His breast; a greater path
He had already walked – He climbed a mount called Calvary!
